The Coastie Summer Edition number 1

It's here. With the overwhelming support from our Tutukaka Coast business community, a good number of Whangarei based businesses and the widespread endorsement from our local readers - thank you, we couldn't have done it without you!

A couple of months ago we thought we'd hope to do about 8 to 12 pages for The Coastie Summer Edition. We finally did a whopping 28 pages! (twenty eight)
It was fun to 'just get started' with The Coastie last January (it was literally bookmark size then...)
We've received feedback like "The Coast really needed something like this" and ... "Good on you for taking this on" ...

So yeah, it's been a fabulous ride this year, learning lots while making and publishing The Coastie every week since January and now making this "bumper" Summer Edition - thanks to our readers and advertisers it all came together in it's unique way, Coastie style.

Already feeling curious how The Coastie may develop in 2013, we are planning to resume weekly publication in February. We are now calling everyone who would like to write or submit locally relevant material to please send it to us or simply make contact by email so we can consider publishing it in the new year as space and funds permit.

Please enjoy The Coastie Summer Edition & share it with your visiting friends. The Coastie will be also available in local outlets like shops, cafes, Oceans and the Tutukaka Holiday Park during the holiday period.
Any feedback, criticism or suggestions are very welcome.

Local Jade Carver Donn Salt Making History in China

Great news in the NZ Herald  today. Out of 2500 entries Donn Salt's White Dragon was awarded the silver medal in China's national Zi Gan Bei jade carving competition held at the end of September 2013. Donn is the first person outside China to win such a prestigeous award. Not a small feat considering China's thousands of years of jade carving history. Congratulations Donn Salt! The Coastie had featured a story about Donn Salt and his work in issue 80, sending him off with our best wishes as he departed to exhibit at the above mentioned competition in the city of Suzhou, eastern China.(click image below to enlarge) You can read the Herald article here .

The Coastie Summer Edition 2014/15 - out now!

With this year's Coastie Summer Edition we're again celebrating local people, art and enterprise. Copies are available free from most business venues along the Tutukaka Coast as well as in Whangarei City, through both i-sites, Reva's at the Town Basin, Himalayan Trading Post, Fat Camel Cafe, Caffeine, Bob Cafe, Tuatara Design Store, just to name a few. We're finished with the layout and the Coastie Summer Magazine Edition is going on the printing press as we speak. 48 colourful pages celebrating local people, art and enterprise on the Tututkaka Coast and Whangarei. Coastie progress - Growing bigger

Number 13 is our first folded A4 format issue, thanks to the enthusiasm and support of Sarah & Steve, the general managers of the Oceans Resort Hotel in Tutukaka, helping to launch their World Dinner Game. We are VERY excited about having a bigger issue already. Issue 13 also contains 2 feature articles, one about super foods for super health by VeganCuisine cooking teacher Kate and one about our local cabinet makers Aaron and Carolyn Rawson trading under Danska cabinetmaking. In issue 12 we had a great time discovering a bit about Stacey Davidson. Stacey is the creator of MyPod here on the coast and in Auckland. As well as working with companies worldwide, Stacey is now making her life designer skills available locally. Her website reveals more about her work. And last but not least, issue 11 was a lot of fun to put together.
